Bahrain forum promotes entrepreneurship for SDGs

Bahrain is taking the lead in promoting entrepreneurship as a means to achieve global peace, prosperity and economic empowerment.

That’s according to an official with the UN Investment Development Organization (UNIDO) based in the country, which is this week hosting a forum on achieving sustainable development through entrepreneurship and innovation.

Countries meet to ensure future of plant genetics

Representatives from 144 countries are meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, this week to ensure that future generations will have access to food and agricultural products that originate from plants.

The nations have agreed to conserve and share the genetic materials of 64 crops— for example, for use in research or breeding—in line with a UN treaty that came into force in 2004.

The UN audiovisual library is a collection of over one million photo, radio, and television items.

They are kept under the watchful eye of chief of audiovisual archives at the United Nations, Antonio da Silva, who’s charged with collecting, preserving, and reformatting 72 years’ worth of materials.

The UN celebrated World Day for Audiovisual Heritage on Friday.

Elena Vapnitchnaia spoke with Mr da Silva about what the library holds and its significance for future generations.

Americas' action plan launched to protect human rights defenders

A plan has been launched to address what one UN body considers among the most pressing problems in the Americas: protection of human rights defenders.

The region accounted for three out of every four recorded murders of these activists worldwide in 2016.

The shocking statistic has been provided by the UN human rights office which has joined with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to take action on the issue.

UN chief reaffirms international support to the Central African Republic

It is now time to end the violence in the Central African Republic (CAR) and consolidate democracy, the UN Secretary-General told the country’s legislators on Friday.

Addressing the National Assembly in the capital, Bangui, António Guterres underscored the international community’s solidarity and commitment to the nation.

A UN operation has been in the CAR since 2014, following violence between mainly Muslim and Christian communities, leaving one in four citizens displaced.

“I lost my dignity in Libya”: FGM survivor and refugee speaks out

Aisha fled her home in Côte d’Ivoire to save her daughter from female genital mutilation (FGM), but the mother’s nightmare only continued at a detention centre in Libya.

The harmful traditional practice of FGM, considered in some communities to be a rite of passage, has propelled thousands of women and girls to flee their homes, only to face harrowing conditions in Libyan detention centres.

Aisha, now safely residing in a refugee reception center in Italy, is still kept awake at night reflecting on the three months of abuse she survived in Libya to reach safety.

UN chief pledges support to national institutions of CAR

Secretary-General António Guterres, on Thursday pledged the support of the UN for building up national institutions across the Central African Republic (CAR).

He was speaking to reporters in the capital Bangui on the third day of his visit to the country, where conflict between Christian and Muslim armed groups has displaced hundreds-of-thousands and led to a worsening humanitarian crisis.

Online media under “significant threat” around the world: UN expert

Online media outlets face “significant threats” from some governments around the world which are trying to quash dissent by accusing journalists of peddling “fake news”.

That’s one of the concerns voiced on Wednesday by David Kaye, who is the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
