Gender equality promoted on the soccer field

Soccer can teach young boys and girls across the world that they are equals, according to the United Nations.

Professional players of the Spanish club, Valencia CF recently held a clinic for aspiring stars at the Beijing Royal School in China.

It was organized in partnership with UN Women, which wants to replicate the awareness-raising activity in other countries.

Ana Carmo spoke with the agency’s Jose Carlos Ferrer and began by asking him what they aim to achieve.

Haiti’s future “depends” on women’s access to leadership positions

The future of Haiti will depend on more women accessing leadership positions, according to UN Women, the United Nations agency dedicated to gender equality.

Nadège Beauvil, who works as a programme specialist in the Caribbean island, says the current focus of her work is getting more women involved in the upcoming local, legislative, and presidential elections.

As voters, but also as candidates.

Women bearing brunt of conflict in South Sudan

Women in South Sudan are bearing the brunt of the ongoing conflict in the country according to the head of the UN agency focusing on gender issues.

Fighting in South Sudan, which has been celebrating the fourth anniversary of its independence, started in December 2013.

Around one and a half million people have been displaced by the conflict.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women, recently visited the country and praised women there for their for their resilience and determination.
