“Step it up” for a gender-equal world, urges UN Women chief
“Step it up” so that women and men, boys and girls have equal rights by 2030, the head of a UN agency focusing on gender issues has urged world leaders.
The call was made ahead of International Women’s Day 2016, observed annually on 8 March.
Heads of State and Government have pledged to crack some of the barriers to closing the gender equality gaps in their countries.
UN Women is calling that aspiration towards gender equality “Planet 50-50”.
The celebration of International Women’s Day on 8 March should remind the world that there is “still a long way to go” before gender equality is fully achieved.
That’s the opinion of Maria Noel Vaeza, Director of the Programme Division at UN Women, the UN’s gender entity, which is calling on countries to step up efforts to close the gender gap, by 2030.
