United Kingdom doubles support for UN-backed Global Fund

The United Kingdom has announced that it is doubling, from 51 million pounds to 100 million pounds, its yearly support in 2006 and 2007 to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, a unique public-private partnership created three years ago on the initiative of United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

With rioting in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum continuing for a third day after the sudden death of first Vice-President and ex-southern rebel leader John Garang, the top United Nations envoy in Sudan called on all the people of country – from political leaders to parents and their children – to “come to their senses” and help restore calm.
