'Long road to recovery' for Dominica, Barbuda, despite pledges

It’s going to be a “long road to recovery” for the hurricane-struck Caribbean islands of Dominica and Barbuda, despite a successful pledging conference at UN Headquarters this week.

That’s the view of Stephen O’Malley, UN Resident Coordinator for Barbados and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, who attended the conference where pledges worth more than $2 billion were made, including loans and debt relief.

'Lifesaving role' of UN medical service in South Sudan

A team of doctors, nurses and technicians plays a “lifesaving role” in South Sudan according to a senior Jordanian doctor in the UN Peacekeeping Mission there, UNMISS.

The UNMISS medical team cares for around 17,000 military, police and civilian staff across the country as well as on occasions South Sudanese civilians.

Major Doctor Zaidoun Al-Rawashdeh is a Jordanian national who has served in UN peacekeeping missions in four countries; Haiti, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and now South Sudan.

Teaching students to be 'analytical thinkers' thanks to Anne Frank

More than 500 students came to UN Headquarters in New York this month to mark the 70th anniversary of the publication of the diary of Anne Frank and celebrate the “deep connection” they feel with the young Holocaust victim.

Her famous diary written as she and her family hid from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic, has inspired several generations since World War Two, and is a testament to the need for greater cultural understanding and respect for diversity.

Move to block torture tools could be 'step forward in civilization'

An initiative to end the trade in lethal drugs and other tools used for capital punishment or torture has been hailed by a senior UN official as a potential “step forward in civilization.”

Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Andrew Gilmour was speaking about a Global Alliance launched in September by the European Union and its partners.

Mr Gilmour sat down with Nargis Shekinskaya recently to discuss ongoing efforts to end the death penalty globally.

Involving men plays crucial role for women’s empowerment, says activist

Men should be playing a more active role in empowering women, and helping to end the scourge of gender-based violence.

That’s one of the messages being expressed on the International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women, by Inna Modja, a Malian singer and activist, who suffered female genital mutilation, or FGM, when she was just 4-years-old.

TV actress faces her fears while spotlighting sexual exploitation

Just one of the ways actress Serinda Swan draws attention to the atrocities of sex trafficking is by jumping out of a plane.

Celebrating World TV Day, Ms Swan spoke on Tuesday at a UN event on the importance of integrating entertainment with philanthropy as a way to spotlight important issues.

She has raised awareness of sex trafficking by having her TV character in the US drama series, Graceland, sold into slavery.

Darfur team’s ordnance education device wins top UN Award

A project that aims to educate people in remote areas of Darfur about the dangers of explosive remnants of war has been awarded a UN prize for innovation and creativity.

The solar powered Risk Education Talking Device (RETD) will contain multiple pre-recorded audios such as songs, interviews and messages, and is designed to benefit people who may not be able to read or who live in areas that lack electricity.

A wish for every child with disabilities 'to have a fair chance'

Children with disabilities deserve to have the same rights as everyone else, which is something that will have a “tremendous impact” on society as a whole.

That’s the message from Emmanuel Elisha Ford, a 16-year-old Guyanese-American disabilities activist, speaking at an event at UN Headquarters on World Children’s Day, observed on Monday.

Elisha stressed that children with disabilities have dreams despite the challenges they face, and his wish is “for every child to have a fair chance.”
