Human rights agenda in North Korea has not seen ‘any progress at all’: UN expert

The international community must put human rights ahead of policy changes, when it comes to negotiations with North Korea, which is officially known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).

That’s the advice of the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights for the nation, Tomas Quintana, who says despite denuclearization and peace developments underway, local authorities have not shown “any willingness” to comply with international human rights law and obligations.

Migration: a global phenomenon we ‘cannot escape:’ UN rights expert

Anti-immigrant rhetoric around the world is increasingly “worrying,” a UN Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders said on Tuesday, and when some governments begin labelling migrants “terrorists”, advocates for their rights “need to find ways to protect them.”

Independent rights expert, Michel Forst, also says defenders themselves often face attacks from local officials, and are at the center of a narrative deeming them “enemies of the state.”

In a ‘difficult year’ for freedom of expression, AI and digital security could help

It's time to ‘demystify’ what we know about artificial intelligence (AI), and monitor its development so it’s consistent with human rights and fosters healthy freedom of expression.

That’s the view of David Kaye, UN Special Rapporteur on the enjoyment of freedom of opinion and expression, who detailed the relationship between the right to expression and technology in a statement to the General Assembly on Monday.
