Extending human rights and denuclearization of DPRK must go together: UN expert

Extending basic human rights across the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea must be part of any deal on denuclearizing the peninsula, according to the UN’s independent rights’ expert on the country.

Tomas Ojea Quintana welcomed recent “rapid progress on the political and security front”, with the Trump Administration suggesting that a summit could be held with DPRK before the end of May.

The Special Rapporteur spoke to Bronwen Cowley.

Flow of Venezuelans across border now 'a humanitarian disaster': WFP chief

The outflow of Venezuelans into neighbouring countries such as Colombia, constitutes a “humanitarian disaster”, said the head of the World Food Programme (WFP) on Tuesday.

Speaking in Colombia, David Beasley also called on international donors to step up support funding — while the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) issued new protection guidance for Governments to address the crisis.

Mr. Beasley spoke to Wolfgang Friedl, in the Colombian capital, Bogota.

Human rights mission in Myanmar finds “untenable suffering”

Reported rights violations committed by government forces in Myanmar against Rohingyas will likely constitute “crimes under international law”, according to the Chairperson of the UN Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar, Marzuki Darusman.

Speaking to Bronwen Cowley in Geneva, following the release of the Mission’s report, Mr. Darusman called on authorities to stop dismissing the seriousness of rights abuse allegations.

Award-winning Pakistani woman filmmaker on a mission to provoke 'difficult conversations'

Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a two time Academy award winner and women’s rights activist says that she is on a mission to force “difficult conversations” that her own society needs to have.
