Pop group using their star appeal for children’s rights

Teenage pop sensation Kids United may be young, but age is no barrier to raising awareness about children’s rights, the group said on Monday.

Speaking ahead of a performance at the UN in Geneva to celebrate World Children’s Day, 15-year-old singer Gabriel Gros told Daniel Johnson that being able to go to school is one of the most important rights of all.

Surviving terror once the cameras move on: one woman’s story

While terrorist attacks draw headlines globally, a recent UN documentary tells the story of what happens to survivors once the cameras move on.

On 22 July 2011, 23-year-old Khamshajiny Gunaratnam was attending a Workers' Youth League Camp on the Norwegian island of Utøya when Anders Breivik opened fire, killing 69 people – including many of her friends.

The film, Surviving Terrorism: Victims' Voices from Norway, was screened at UN Headquarters in New York last week.

'Pooling competences' of contributors means safer peacekeeping

Pooling the different strengths of countries which contribute thousands of troops to UN missions around the world, will make peacekeeping safer and more effective.

That’s the view of Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khurram Dastgir Khan, who is attending the UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial conference in Vancouver, Canada.

Senior politicians and military leaders from more than 80 countries have joined UN Peacekeeping teams to discuss how to fill vital gaps in equipment and personnel.

Iceland tops global table for IT progress in 2017

The digital gap between richer and poorer countries is growing, the UN said on Wednesday, as it announced that Iceland leads the way for information communication technology usage.

According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Nordic nation outperformed the rest of the global community, with the Republic of Korea and Switzerland in second and third place respectively.

Make communities more resilient to future climate shocks: UNEP official

Governments have a “huge responsibility” in ensuring that communities can respond to rising sea levels or other impacts of climate change, a senior official with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has said.

UNEP Deputy Executive Director Ibrahim Thiaw believes this preparation is especially critical for African countries, whose economies rely heavily on agriculture and fisheries.
