Ebola infections decrease, but new hot spots identified

The number of cases of the deadly Ebola disease is declining in affected countries in West Africa but new outbreaks are being reported in areas with little or no transmission.

That’s according to the World Health Organization’s latest situation report on Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

In Guinea, there’s been a surge of new cases in the south-east of the country as Daniel Johnson reports.

“Womenomics” linking gender equality and economic growth

The world would be a different place if its nations believed and practiced what’s been called “womenomics”, a theory linking the advancement of women to increased development rates.

The concept, originally defined by the Japanese Prime Minister Abe, was being highlighted by the Executive Director of UN Women, the UN agency for gender equality, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

She was at the World Assembly for Women in Tokyo where she announced the forthcoming opening of a new UN Women office.

“New, universal, meaningful” climate deal expected in 2015

Countries are expected to adopt a “new, universal and meaningful” climate agreement next year, according to a senior UN official.

Selwin Hart, the Director of the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Support Team made the observation ahead of the Paris Climate Summit scheduled in 2015.

World leaders are expected to make new commitments and pledges to keep global temperatures below 2 degrees centigrade.

Mr Hart told Jocelyne Sambira that the recent climate talks held in Lima, Peru have “paved the way” for a global pact.

UN backed global agenda represents views of “everyday people”

A new global agenda aiming to end poverty, transform lives and protect the planet by 2030 represents the views of “everyday people”.

That’s according to Nikhil Chandavarkar, Chief of Communication and Outreach in the Division for Sustainable Development at UNDESA.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are set to replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) this year.
