Parties to the conflict in Mali must be encouraged to accelerate implementation of a 2015 peace agreement, the new UN peacekeeping chief Jean Pierre Lacroix told the Security Council on Thursday. The deal signed by the Government and armed groups sought to end three years of instability, including a failed military coup and the seizure of the north by radical Islamists. Dianne Penn reports.

Hunger-related illnesses have killed 47 children over the past two months at just one government-run hospital in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. The UN has been warning the world of the dire consequences of drought in the Horn of Africa country, where nearly three million are at risk of famine. UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently appealed for US$ 825 million to support more than five million people in the next six months. Dianne Penn reports.
UN humanitarian chief meets Somalis displaced by drought
A severe drought is affecting Somalia where more than six million people, or roughly half the population, are in need of humanitarian assistance. UN Humanitarian Coordinator chief Stephen O’Brien arrived in the country on Monday to assess the impact. Laura Gelbert accompanied the relief chief on his visit to a site for displaced people known as the Zone K IDP settlement, located in the capital, Mogadishu.
