Climate change and global warming are the main challenges faced by communities living in the mountains of Nepal, according to a representative from the country’s Mountaineering Association.

Ang Tshering Sherpa said that temperature rises combined with the huge earthquake of April 2015, changed the course of rivers, adversely affecting the lives of many inhabitants in the region.

In recognition of International Mountain Day, celebrated annually on 11th December, Nepal is hosting a two day Mountain Festival, highlighting the importance of protecting mountain communities and preserving their environment.

Traditional archery, wall climbing and a cello competition are just some of the events taking place at the Festival in Pokhara, Nepal.

Priyanka Shankar asked Ang Tshering Sherpa how important the international day was.
