Acquiring language skills is a big challenge for migrants and refugees entering Europe but it’s also the key to success, a renowned US economist says.

A new immigrant who does not speak the local language misses out on job opportunities and earns less, according to Professor Barry Chiswick who studies labour markets and immigration at George Washington University.

More than a million migrants have entered Europe this year, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Speaking to Bruce Edwards of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he began by explaining how language is a “form of human capital.”
