Migration: a global phenomenon we ‘cannot escape:’ UN rights expert

Anti-immigrant rhetoric around the world is increasingly “worrying,” a UN Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders said on Tuesday, and when some governments begin labelling migrants “terrorists”, advocates for their rights “need to find ways to protect them.”

Independent rights expert, Michel Forst, also says defenders themselves often face attacks from local officials, and are at the center of a narrative deeming them “enemies of the state.”

Language holds key to migrant success in Europe

Acquiring language skills is a big challenge for migrants and refugees entering Europe but it’s also the key to success, a renowned US economist says.

A new immigrant who does not speak the local language misses out on job opportunities and earns less, according to Professor Barry Chiswick who studies labour markets and immigration at George Washington University.

More than a million migrants have entered Europe this year, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
