The push for a mine-free world has come a long way since a global treaty banning the weapons came into force in 1999, but the time has come to make one last collective effort, Kofi Annan said Wednesday.

In a message to the First International Pledging Conference for the Implementation of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention in Geneva, the former UN Secretary-General warned that few parts of the world are free from the threat of landmines today.

There are believed to be hundreds of thousands of victims from landmines, mostly civilians and especially children, with casualties occurring at an average of 10 a day, according to latest figures.
