Philippine singing group named Artist for Peace by UNESCO

The award-winning Philippine Madrigal Singers have been selected as the newest Artist for Peace by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the agency announced today.

The singing group was chosen “in recognition of their efforts to promote dialogue and understanding among peoples in South-East Asia, their contribution to extend UNESCO’s message of peace and tolerance, and their dedication to the ideals and aims of the Organization,” according to a press release.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers, known as the MADZ, will serve as ambassadors for UNESCO for the next two years, participating in a series of projects, including Concerts for Peace, a Sing for Peace festival and various choral singing classes, workshops and other activities.

The group began in 1963 and has trained more than 200 singers and choral music specialists since then. It performs many different genres of music, but is most known for the Renaissance style for which it is named. Its long list of awards includes the 2007 European Grand Prix for Choral Singing.

UNESCO Artists for Peace are internationally renowned personalities who use their influence, charisma and prestige to help promote the agency’s message and programmes. The artists include Manu Dibango, a Cameroonian musician; Sumi Jo, a Republic of Korea soprano; and Gilberto Gil, a Brazilian musician.
