UN mission in Côte d’Ivoire deplores wounding of peacekeeper

The United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) today condemned a recent incident in which an unidentified gunman stole a cell phone from a West African peacekeeper and then wounded him. It called on the national authorities to investigate.

“The Togolese peacekeeper was on duty outside the UNOCI logistics base in Abidjan’s suburb of Koumassi, when an unidentified armed man aboard a taxi relieved him of his mobile phone before shooting him in the abdomen,” it said.

UNOCI said the soldier was immediately transferred to a clinic in Abidjan, the largest city in the world’s top cocoa producer, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
