Nearly 3 million voters register in DR of Congo’s capital, UN says
The Kinshasa tally was 2.9 million out of 3.5 million potential voters, while 23,000 people had registered at centres which opened about a week ago in the western Bas-Congo province and northeastern Orientale province, Stéphane Dujarric told journalists at the daily briefing.
Voter registration centres were to be opened next Sunday in southeastern Katanga province and in Central, Eastern and Western Kasaï provinces, he said.
The polls will choose candidates to form the first democratic Government in DRC in about 40 years and to replace the present transitional multi-party administration, which took power as several regions of the vast country emerged from the conflicts over ethnicity and land ownership which still erupt sporadically in the east.
