Sierra Leone: UN mission reports ceasefire violation by pro-government militia

The United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) today reported another ceasefire violation by a government-backed militia in the diamond-rich part of the country.

The reported violation occurred in the Koidu area yesterday, when members of the Civil Defence Force (CDF) attacked Revolutionary United Front (RUF) positions.

UNAMSIL's Force Commander, Lt. Gen Daniel Opande, was in Koidu today, according to a UN spokesman.

The Security Council established UNAMSIL in October 1999 to cooperate with the Government and the other parties in implementing the Lomé Peace Agreement and to assist in the implementation of the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration plan.
