Sudan: Annan welcomes Government's move to halt air strikes in country's south

Secretary-General Kofi Annan today welcomed the announcement by the Government of the Sudan that it would halt all air attacks in the country's south and in the Nuba Mountains.

A spokesman for Mr. Annan said the Secretary-General "hopes that this positive step will help reduce the sufferings of the people in these areas and will also enhance the prospects for peace."

On 24 May, the Sudanese Government declared that it would immediately stop all aerial attacks in the strife-torn region.
