United Nations peacekeepers can’t be allowed to become sexual predators, said the UN field support chief on Friday.

Atul Khare was speaking ahead of the launch of the UN Secretary-General’s report on special measures being taken to protect those at risk from sexual exploitation and abuse.

The UN chief Ban Ki-moon pledged last December to urgently review recommendations made by an independent panel, which found the UN had not reacted with the “speed, care or sensitivity required” in investigating allegations of sexual abuse of children by soldiers, not under UN command.

Stephanie Coutrix asked Under Secretary-General Khare to outline the UN’s efforts to eradicate abuse in its peacekeeping missions around the world.
