One in eight people living with HIV is being denied health care because of the stigma associated with the virus, according to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

There have also been cases where HIV-positive women were forcibly sterilized or their pregnancies terminated.

On World Zero Discrimination Day observed 1 March, the UN is calling for “equal and respectful” health services for these marginalized groups.

Jocelyne Sambira has been speaking to Luisa Cabral, UNAIDS Chief of the Human Rights and Law Division, about how widespread the problem is.
