An “outpouring of generosity” in Canada was a crucial factor in the country managing to welcome 10,000 Syrian refugees in less than two months.

That’s according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) representative based in the capital, Ottawa, Furio De Angelis.

In November, the new Canadian government announced an ambitious programme to admit 25,000 refugees, and the milestone of 10,000 was reached on Thursday.

Matthew Wells spoke to Mr De Angelis and asked him how significant Canada’s speedy processing of Syrian asylum seekers really was.
