Protecting people in some of the world’s most dangerous places is now a critical component of the work done by the UN Police, or UNPOL, the Security Council was told on Friday.

In a briefing to the Council, several high-ranking UNPOL officials said that their work, often done in hardship conditions, continued to be challenging, particularly given the large number of displaced people around the world.

The number of deployed UNPOL officers has almost tripled in the last decade, to more than 17,000. They support peace operations in countries, such as Haiti, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan and South Sudan, among others.
