UN agencies and their partners are working to combat a cholera outbreak in Iraq that so far has resulted in more than 2,200 cases of the diarrhoeal disease.

Cholera is caused by contaminated food or water.  It can lead to severe dehydration and death if treatment is not provided quickly.

The UN children’s agency, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization, WHO, have been supporting distribution of safe water and medication to local communities in addition to providing information on how to prevent cholera.

Basma Baghall has been speaking to Karim Elkorany, UNICEF spokesperson in Iraq.
