Talks between Saudi Arabia and Iran could finally put an end to the intractable war in neighbouring Syria, according to the UN’s top official for the strife-torn nation.

Staffan de Mistura said the “substantial influence” of the two countries in the region could end Syria’s five-year conflict within a month.

Over 250,000 people have been killed and nearly half the population has fled the country since the start of the conflict in March 2011.
