Charity is not only about the rich giving to the poor, but also about “everyday” people helping each other out.

That’s according to Eva Schafer, a human rights and social development officer at the Hungarian Mission to the UN.

She said charitable contributions to fight poverty and inequality will be crucial for implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The sentiment of helping each other in time of need is commemorated annually on the International Day of Charity, celebrated 5 September.

At Hungary’s initiative, the UN General Assembly designated 5 September 2013 the first International Day to mark the one year anniversary of the passing of Mother Teresa.
