A global campaign against the exploitation of children has been launched by the International Labour Organization (ILO) on June 12 which is observed each year as World Day against Child Labour.

The ILO says it launched the day in 2002 “to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it.”

According to the ILO, there are 168 million children working around the world, the majority of them in agriculture.

The agency has warned that United Nations targets on the elimination of the worst forms of child labour by 2016 are not going to be met.
