UN-African peacekeeping force reports two missing blue helmets

Two peacekeepers have gone missing in the Sudanese state of North Darfur, according to the joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission, known by the acronym UNAMID.

On 20 August, the two UNAMID peacekeepers were declared missing in the town of Kabkabiya, located approximately 140 kilometres west of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state.

In a news release, UNAMID said the incident was being investigated by both the Mission and the Government of the Sudan.

Darfur has been wracked with conflict since 2003, pitting Government forces and allied militiamen against rebel groups. Millions of civilians have been either internally displaced or forced to seek refuge in neighbouring countries.
