Reacting to clashes in the capital of Somalia and surrounding areas, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today urged those concerned to resolve their differences through talks in accordance with the country’s Transitional Federal Charter.

“The Secretary-General continues to be concerned about the violence in Mogadishu and its environs,” a spokesman for Mr. Annan said in a statement.

The Secretary-General appealed to all sides to stop the fighting and enter into negotiations.

“He stresses that all parties to the conflict should resolve their differences and address outstanding issues in accordance with the Transitional Federal Charter of Somalia,” the spokesman said.
