Broadcasters invited to enter UN-sponsored contest on role of sport for peace

Broadcasters from around the world have been invited to submit entries for the United Nations-backed 2006 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) Award honouring the best programming that highlights the role of sport in development and peace.

“This is a remarkable opportunity for broadcasters around the globe to be lauded for their contribution to the health, education, equality and protection of the world’s children,” the chief of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Internet, Broadcast and Image Section, Stephen Cassidy, said.

To be eligible, sponsored by UNICEF and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the broadcast must have taken place on or around Sunday, 10 December 2005 in conjunction with the 2005 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting, whose theme was Sport for Development and Peace.

UNICEF also announced the theme for the upcoming 2006 International Children Day of Broadcasting: Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS.

UNICEF and the Academy are calling on broadcasters to participate in the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting on 10 December, 2006 and highlight youth voices on the subject of HIV/AIDS. Participating broadcasters will be eligible to submit entries for the 2007 ICDB Award.

“The International Academy of Arts & Sciences and UNICEF are working together to encourage and recognize these broadcasters,” Mr. Cassidy said. “We applaud broadcasters and ask them to continue to bring their talent and resources to the critical job of creating programming for and about children.”
