Annan mourns passing of his former representative for Ethiopia and Eritrea

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today paid tribute to Sissel Ekaas, his former special representative for the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), who passed away in her home country of Norway as a result of serious illness, according to a UN spokesperson.

“The Secretary-General extends his profound condolences to Ms. Sissel Ekaas’ family,” spokesperson Marie Okabe said. “She is warmly remembered by colleagues in the UN family, and she will be deeply missed.”

Before her service with UNMEE, Ms. Ekaas had a distinguished career in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as well as her country’s Government, Ms Okabe said.
