After ex-premier's murder, Security Council underscores Lebanon's sovereignty

The United Nations Security Council today called on all parties to cooperate fully in the restoration of the territorial integrity, full sovereignty and political independence of Lebanon and in the fight against terrorism following the assassination yesterday of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Condemning the attack "unequivocally," the Council called on the Lebanese Government to bring to justice "the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of this heinous terrorist act," voicing grave concern at its possible impact on ongoing efforts by the people of Lebanon to solidify the country's democracy, including upcoming parliamentary elections.

"Such a terrorist act should not jeopardize the holding of these elections in transparent, free and democratic conditions," the 15-member body added in a statement read by the Council President for February, Ambassador Joel W. Adechi of Benin.

"The Security Council reaffirms its previous calls upon all parties concerned to cooperate fully and urgently with the Security Council for the full implementation of all relevant resolutions concerning the restoration of the territorial integrity, full sovereignty and political independence of Lebanon," the statement added.

The Council also asked Secretary-General Kofi Annan to follow closely the situation in Lebanon and "to report urgently on the circumstances, causes and consequences of this terrorist act."
