Former combatants of the Movement for Democracy in Liberia (MODEL) lined up in an orderly manner to hand over their weapons as the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) launched a disarmament programme today in the West African country’s second city of Buchanan, the UN spokesman said.
An earlier disarmament programme at Gbargna continued for ex-fighters of the Liberians United for Democracy and Freedom (LURD) movement, spokesman Fred Eckhard said at the daily press briefing.
Some 1,300 Liberian ex-combatants have been disarmed and demobilized since 15 April, he said.
