Following up on an agreement reached last year between the United Nations and the European Union (EU), officials from both organizations today held a day long meeting at UN Headquarters in New York on joint efforts to manage emerging crises.

A UN spokesman reported that Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Hédi Annabi is heading the UN side of today’s EU-UN Steering Committee talks, which focus on ways to implement the Joint Declaration on UN-EU Cooperation in Crisis Management.

Signed on 24 September by Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy, acting as the EU Presidency, the text constitutes a detailed plan on how to best coordinate efforts in emergency situations. It defines the respective roles of each in military and civilian relief operations and disaster situations.
