United Nations Volunteers are backing efforts by the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide nutritious food to people suffering from HIV/AIDS - the fourth biggest cause of death globally.

Thirty volunteers will support the WFP scheme in 11 countries, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, where the pandemic has had the most devastating impact. They will track the impact of the agency's food projects, which also benefit families of those living with HIV.

The UN Volunteers (UNV) will operate in Angola, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Haiti, Mozambique, Myanmar, Niger, Rwanda, Swaziland and Uganda.

Overall, WFP is helping HIV/AIDS patients, especially those who are the breadwinners for their families, in 41 countries.
