Describing it as the first significant operation of its kind, the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) said today that it had conducted a joint border patrol with the Sierra Leonean army in the northern district of Kambia along the border with Guinea.

“The joint border patrol was a great success and it exemplifies a mutual cooperation between UNAMSIL and RSLAF,” the Mission said in a statement, referring to its joint effort with the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.

The three-day patrol, which began on 8 February, involved UN peacekeepers from the Kenyan battalion and a platoon from the RSLAF’s Force Reconnaissance Unit.

According to UNAMSIL, the patrol was a join initiative of the Mission’s Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Daniel I. Opande, and the RSLAF.
