UN wraps up human rights assessment mission to Côte d'Ivoire

United Nations officials returned to Geneva today after spending close to a week in Côte d'Ivoire observing the human rights situation in the country.

Led by the Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Bertrand Ramcharan, the members of the mission travelled to Abidjan, Yamoussoukro, Daloa and Bouaké, where they gathered precise information on the human rights and humanitarian situation, according to a UN spokesman.

The mission also had the opportunity to meet with President Laurent Gbagbo and members of his Government, as well as representatives of the Patriotic Movement of Côte d'Ivoire, civil society and local and international humanitarian agencies.

The mission’s report will be submitted to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and to the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Sergio Vieira de Mello.
