UN envoy continuing 'intensive' talks in Copenhagen on Annan's Cyprus proposal

Mr. Alvaro de Soto
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan's top advisor for Cyprus continued his work in Copenhagen today as part of the intensive consultations going on regarding the revised proposal put forward earlier this week by the UN leader, a UN spokesman said today in New York.

Asked about the efforts of Special Advisor Alvaro de Soto at the European Union's summit, spokesman Fred Eckhard told reporters it was hoped the parties would agree on the document on the table as a framework to begin serious and intensive negotiations on a final agreement.

“That’s what he, and all of us, were hoping to get by the beginning, or before the beginning of the summit that started today,” he said. Under a worse case scenario, it was hoped that such an agreement could be reached by the end of the meeting.

"Should that fail, we're always prepared to continue seeking agreement, first on the framework and, hopefully, leading eventually to a final agreement," he added.
