Kosovo: UN mission says no new mass graves discovered

Responding to what it called inaccurate news reports, the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) today said it could not confirm the discovery of any new mass grave in Suva Reka, or in the rest of the province.

The Mission's Missing Persons and Forensics Unit continues to oversee exhumations and identifications of remains in dozens of sites around Kosovo, including at the cemetery based in Suva Reka, according to an UNMIK statement.

The cemetery contains remains of bodies exhumed by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in 1999-2000 and is well known to forensics experts and Kosovo and Serbian authorities, the statement said.

While stressing that no new mass burial areas have been discovered, UNMIK said its Missing Persons and Forensics Unit "continues to receive and welcome any new information on possible gravesites."
