Annan names new envoys for West Africa and Great Lakes Region

The United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, has announced the appointment of new envoys to two key regions in Africa.

According to an exchange of letters between Mr. Annan and the Security Council released today, Ibrahima Fall, a former UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, has been appointed as the Secretary-General's Special Representative for the Great Lakes Region.

Mr. Fall would replace Berhanu Dinka, who was reassigned last month as the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Burundi.

In another appointment, Mr. Annan has named Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, a senior diplomat from Mauritania and a former high-level UN official, as his Special Representative for West Africa. Mr. Ould-Abdallah is currently the Executive Director of Global Coalition for Africa.
