UN envoy attends closing session of inter-Congolese dialogue in bid to boost talks

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan's envoy for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) today attended the closing session of formal talks between the parties to the conflict in the country.

Special Representative Amos Ngongi was in Sun City, South Africa, to bring encouragement to the participants of the inter-Congolese dialogue, which was scheduled to end today but might continue until Friday, a UN spokesman said in New York.

Meanwhile in the DRC, a team of UN military observers was in the northeast part of the country, where violent conflicts took place in Ganga between two factions of the Rally for Congolese Democracy (RCD).

According to a preliminary investigation, 15 people have been killed in the fighting.
