Afghanistan: Brahimi travels to Herat for talks with local officials

Lakhdar Brahimi, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, travelled to the city of Herat in the east of Afghanistan today for a series of meetings with local officials.

The trip – his first to Herat since the Bonn Agreement was signed in November last year – is part of a series that will take Mr. Brahimi throughout the country to discuss problems and solutions with local authorities and UN staff in the field, his spokesman, Manoel de Almeida e Silva, said on Sunday in Kabul.

After meeting with the Governor of Herat province, Ismail Khan, and other dignitaries, Mr. Brahimi will travel south to Kandahar – former stronghold of the Taliban regime – tomorrow for a series of meetings with authorities there.
