Afghanistan: Senior UN official holds meetings in Kabul on reconstruction efforts

A senior United Nations official visited Afghanistan today, where he discussed various initiatives to rebuild the war-shattered nation with UN staff organizing those efforts.

UN Chief of Staff Iqbal Riza, who was met at the Kabul airport by the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Lakhdar Brahimi, discussed humanitarian and reconstruction assistance programmes with UN agency representatives in the Afghan capital.

According to a UN spokesperson, Mr. Riza’s meetings focused on food assistance, refugee repatriation, and preparations for the return of students to classrooms in advance of the 23 March start of the school year. The issue of security was also raised.

In separate meetings, the Chief of Staff held talks with the Force Commander of the International Security Assistance Force, Maj. Gen. John McColl, and with Sima Samar, the Minister for Women’s Affair in the Interim Administration.
