In talks with Afghan Foreign Minister, Brahimi reviews plans for Loya Jirga

As part of his ongoing efforts to help facilitate a political transition in Afghanistan, the United Nations chief envoy for the country, Lakhdar Brahimi, today held talks with the Afghan Minister for Foreign Affairs.

In his meeting with Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, the UN envoy focused on the formation of the Loya Jirga or council of elders. The convening of the Loya Jirga is envisaged by the political agreement signed last December by various Afghan factions attending UN-sponsored talks in Bonn.

Also today, Mr. Brahimi, who is Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative, continued his contacts with members of the civil society and professional groups.

Among other meetings, Mr. Brahimi discussed the upcoming Afghanistan Reconstruction Conference in Tokyo with the former UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Sadako Ogata, who is now the Special Advisor on Afghanistan to the Japanese Government.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Mr. Brahimi reported today that Bernard Frahi, a senior official of the UN Drug Control Programme, would arrive in Kabul next week to hold meetings concerning the country's efforts in the war on drugs.
