Sierra Leone: UN officials meet with RUF leaders on security, disarmament

Security issues were at the centre of weekend discussions between top officials of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) and a delegation of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), a UN spokesman said today in New York.

During the meeting at Makeni on Saturday, the head of UNAMSIL, Ambassador Oluyemi Adeniji, and Force Commander Lt. Gen. Daniel Opande discussed the disarmament and reintegration process, as well as the proposed Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Special Court, with RUF interim leader Issa Sesay.

Responding to RUF concerns about security following the disarmament exercise, Ambassador Adeniji gave assurances that UNAMSIL would investigate all credible reports relating to security concerns, the spokesman said.
