The unprecedented scale-up in response to HIV and AIDS is producing results around the world, according to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

A UNAIDS report launched on Tuesday shows that new HIV infections have dropped by more than 50 per cent in 25 countries. AIDS-related deaths globally have also declined by one-quarter between 2005 and 2011.

The report, released ahead of World AIDS Day on 1 December, also finds that the number of people with access to antiretroviral treatments has risen by more than 60 per cent over the past 24 months.
