Countries, businesses, philanthropic organizations and UN entities at the Rio+20 conference are pledging to create a cleaner, greener, more equitable world.

They are making voluntary commitments in any of 23 areas related to sustainable development such as climate change, sustainable education and green jobs, but also education, gender equality and public awareness.

The commitments are not just promises on paper as they are required to be measurable and to have specific deliverables.

Among the nearly 500 commitments made so far at Rio+20 is a $175 billion investment by the world’s largest multi-lateral development banks to fund sustainable transport systems over the next decade.
