The Darfur region of Sudan is a very different place from what it was like in 2003 when the armed conflict began, the head of the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has said.

As a result of a three-year military campaign, the Government has been able to take control of areas previously held by rebel groups, said Jeremiah Mamabolo who is also the Joint Special Representative and Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur.

However, banditry and criminality are now widespread because of the proliferation of weapons left over from the war, he warned.

Jocelyne Sambira asked Mr Mamabolo about the safety of civilians but also about an exit strategy that was being debated at the UN and AU.
