Accessing health care is a challenge for most people in Syria, where six years of conflict have left more than half of all public hospitals and primary health centres closed or only partially functioning.

That information comes from the World Health Organization (WHO) which adds that nearly two-thirds of health workers have fled the country.

In marking the “sad anniversary” of the start of the war in Syria, WHO is calling for unhindered access so that it can deliver life-saving medicines, supplies and equipment to people in need.

WHO representative in Syria Elizabeth Hoff told May Yaacoub why the UN agency considers health care a “casualty” of the conflict.
