HIV prevention in the Philippines is “difficult” and challenging because of church teaching against the use of condoms, the UN’s Children Fund, UNICEF, has said.

The Philippines’ Department of Health plans to distribute condoms in schools in a bid to educate young people about the spread of HIV.

However, some government officials have decided to block the plan because it might promote promiscuity.

About 62 percent of new HIV infections in the Philippines occur among 18 to 24-year-olds.

Andita Listyarini asked Lotta Sylwander of UNICEF Philippines, to explain why the plan was being so strongly opposed.
